We are here to teach conservation and the art of fly fishing. Join us and learn the techniques and skills you will need to begin your newest addiction.

Trout Academy

Fly fishing/casting program - $275 for a two day course. We have 2 instructors for every class and allow a maximum of 8 students per class


Day 1

  •   8:00am - 8:30am - Introductions and proper equipment set up.
  •   8:30am - 9:30am - Hands on roll casting instruction.
  •   9:30am - 9:45am - Coffee break.
  •  9:45am - 10:00am - Line Design.
  • 10:00am - 10:30am - Knots.
  •  10:30am - 11:00am - New Jersey entomology and fish species.
  •  11:00am - 11:30am - Just a little more roll casting.
  •  11:30am - 12:30pm - Lunch.
  •    2:30pm - 1:30pm - Overhead casting instruction.
  •    1:30pm - 2:00pm - Intro to false casting.
  •   2:00pm - 2:30pm - River dynamics (seams, eddy’s, hydraulics…..).
  •   2:30pm - 3:00pm - Bring your casting full circle (Combine all that you have learned).
  •   3:00pm - 4:00pm - On water casting.

Day 2

  •   8:00am - 8:30am - Fine tune your casting.
  •   8:30am - 9:00am - Fish handling and conservation.
  •   9:00am - 9:30am - Common East Coast fly selections.
  •   9:30am - 9:45am - Coffee break.
  •  9:45am - 10:00am - How weather can affect your fishing; high and low water conditions, extreme heat and freezing temps…
  • 10:00am - 10:30am - Q & A session.
  •  10:30am - 11:30am - Cast to perfection.
  •  11:30am - 12:00pm - Short lunch.
  •  12:00pm - 4:00pm - Time to put everything you’ve learned out on the river!

All students go home with a fly box and 6 essential Jersey flies! 

Our Fly Fishing classes run on weekends only, from late March to late November. All dates are subject to change due to weather and temperatures. Winter classes are available; please call or e-mail for rates and times.

Recommended Items:

Polarized sun glasses, hat, sun screen, wading boots, pen/pencil and a notepad. Please bring a bagged lunch, drinks will be provided.
